Nikro builds vent sanitizing equipment across several lines, and matching the right replacement part matters more than with some other brands. The UV-201, UV-202, and UV-210 series use 16-inch and 32-inch lamp lengths with 4-pin single-ended bases, while the SC-12 and SC-14 ozone generators run on a different voltage configuration entirely. The label on your unit’s housing will show a serial prefix - UV units start with “UV2,” ozone units with “SC1” - and that’s the first thing we check when you call.

We source both OEM Nikro lamps and quality aftermarket equivalents from Ushio and Philips that match the 253.7 nanometer wavelength spec. The aftermarket lamps typically last 9,000 hours versus 12,000 for OEM, but in New York’s hard water and high-humidity summer conditions, we’ve found most UV lamps degrade faster than rated anyway. Signs Your Nikro Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

• The “clean” smell after duct cleaning fades within two weeks. A working UV-C system should suppress microbial growth at the coil and drain pan. When the lamp output drops below 40 microwatts per square centimeter, mold colonies reestablish faster than the reduced UV can control them.
• Visible dark spots return on vent covers or the coil housing. This usually means the lamp is still glowing but has shifted off the 253.7 nm germicidal peak, often from electrode degradation after 12-16 months of runtime.
• The ozone generator runs but there’s no detectable ozone odor. On SC-series units, the corona cell plates foul with dust and oil vapor, or the transformer drops voltage. The unit sounds normal but produces nothing.
• Intermittent operation or buzzing from the ballast housing. Ballasts in Nikro units are mounted near the air handler, and in New York’s summer humidity, moisture intrusion causes arc-over failures. The lamp flickers, the ballast overheats, and eventually the thermal cutout trips.
• Your energy bill jumps with no other HVAC changes. A failing ballast draws excess current while delivering reduced output. We’ve measured 2.3 amps on a unit that should pull 1.8, with the homeowner noticing the spike before any smell or visible symptom.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s where we’d rather you stopped. You can check whether the lamp is glowing by removing the inspection port with the power off - the purple glow should be visible through the glass. You can also read the label for the model and serial number, which saves us time when you call.

What we don’t recommend: pulling the lamp while the unit is energized, testing the ballast with a multimeter without proper lockout, or trying to clean ozone generator cells with household solvents. The 277-volt ballast in some commercial Nikro units can hold a lethal charge after power-down, and ozone cells operate at high voltage with exposed conductors. We’ve been called to jobs where a homeowner cracked the quartz sleeve and didn’t notice, then ran the system for six months with unfiltered UV hitting the plastic duct liner. That’s a fire risk.
